Katarina began to skate when she was five years old. She was only five when her talent became evident, and in Karl-Marx-Stadt she entered the school that was specifically made for kids with sporting talents. The school where she was enrolled, she was introduced to the trainer Jutta Muler. Witt made her mark when she was ranked second in the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. After that, she began dominating the sport with her elegance and grace. Olympic success at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal in figure skating for women in a highly competitive contest. Four years later she was able to win an even tighter contest. She was not a winner in the contest for free skating, but she did win gold on the basis of performance during the mandatory figure and short program. Witt was the first woman to be a repeated winner of figure skating, following Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating after her success as a movie actress. She took part in the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Witt was seventh in the competition, and she delighted fans despite not winning an award. In 1995, Witt got inducted into World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
